Programmes Speak out

Jack Petchey's "Speak Out" Challenge! - The world's biggest youth speaking event.

Thanks to the support and sponsorship of the Jack Petchey Foundation, the "Speak Out" Challenge! allows 500 Schools from 46 Regions take part in one challenge. To date, over 60,000 teenagers have benefited from this programme and during the course of last year alone over 16,000 teenagers will have spoken out in front of an audience of 100,000 people.

This one day workshop is a dynamic programme that trains up to 25 students per workshop to communicate effectively and to think on their feet. The day culminates in a "Speak Out" speech contest where students can speak on any subject they feel strongly about with no restrictions on what they talk about and only their voices, their words and their passion. The winners then progress to compete in the "Speak Out" Assembly Final, then onto one of the 36 Regional Finals before reaching the Gala Grand Final where 15 regional champions will speak out in front of a panel of prestigious judges in their bid to become the next Challenge! Champion.

Financially Speaking

Financially Speaking

Financially Speaking is a programme for young people which combines public speaking training and financial literacy. In an academic year Financially speaking trains up to 1000 young people from schools and youth work organisations across London and Edinburgh. Delivered by Speakers trust trainers, and with the support of Citi Foundation volunteers, the training covers: top money tips; responsible ways to get and save money; and budgeting and banking.

The learning from these sessions is reinforced by interactive exercises which are designed to help the young people understand money management and decisions. The sessions also include practical advice on public speaking which is put into immediate practice with a speaking competition, where the participants deliver speeches on a financial topic.

Speak Out Schools Competition, Herefordshire

With the support of the Four Acre Trust, Speakers Trust piloted a scheme in Hertfordshire for 13 state secondary schools and two Pupil Referral Units. The model of this programme follows the "Speak Out" Challenge! training as funded by the jack Petchey Foundation.

Environmentally Speaking

Environmentally Speaking

In Spring 2011 Speakers Trust worked in partnership with Global Action Plan in Bristol, funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, to deliver a feasibility study for a schools training programme Environmentally Speaking.

This programme highlighted the importance of public speaking in the campaigning process. It was also intended to develop a model for measuring the outcomes and impact that our training has at an individual and organisational level.

Nerves never disappear completely but it is possible to get the 'butterflies flying in formation'. Speakers Trust offers a variety of training workshops for adults and children alike to develop these skills, either as a group or for individuals.
