Grief, in its many forms, is one of the most painful experiences that anyone can suffer, and every year it is experienced by thousands of families in the UK.

  • Around 53 children and young people are bereaved of a mother or father every day.
  • Each year almost 3,000 children and young people die between the ages of 1 and 19, as a result of illness or accident.
  • Every year one baby in a hundred dies before, at, or soon after birth - that is 17 babies each day.
  • A further 1,200 babies die before reaching their first birthday.
  • One in four pregnant women has a miscarriage.
  • Advances in antenatal screening mean that more than 35,000 women will be told that there is a risk that their unborn baby may have a serious abnormality, leaving parents to make very difficult decisions around termination of pregnancy.
  • Each day many couples face the grief of failed IVF treatment.
  • Each year, around 6,000 families are bereaved by suicide.

While so different, these experiences and many others involve strong feelings of loss.

The Child Bereavement Charity (CBC) provides specialised support, information and training to all those affected when a baby or child dies, or when a child is bereaved. By learning continuously from children and parents, CBC leads the way in improving the quality of care offered by professionals to such families, both in the immediate crisis and in the time following the death of someone important in their lives.

We provide a wide range of training courses and award-winning resources for families and for professionals from the NHS, emergency services, schools, social care and the voluntary sector.

Our dedicated Support and Information Service - including our website with its interactive forums, our national confidential Support and Information Line on 01494 446648 and our Buckinghamshire based Family Bereavement Support Service - provides help and guidance for families and professionals.

Everything the charity does is based on what we have learned from bereaved families and children.  Families work with us as volunteers - they inform our training and resources, contribute to projects and research, and help us raise awareness through the media.
