Why Run for Us?

When refugees are forced to flee their homes, often with little more than the clothes on their backs, UNHCR is there to provide security and protection.

Be a Hero for Humanity and run for refugees in the Run Melbourne on Sunday July 30 2017. Your personal challenge will make a difference in the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable people by helping UNHCR go into action when violence erupts and disaster strikes.

As a Champion Fundraiser registration is free and in exchange we ask you to kindly commit to raising a minimum of $1,000. As a team member we will provide you with one-to-one fundraising support and a Team UNHCR running singlet. There will be a pre-race meet and greet and a team to cheer you on at race day.

Where will the money go?

War breaks out in Syria. An earthquake erupts in Nepal. Within 72 hours, a UNHCR emergency response team is on the ground, providing lifesaving essentials like shelter, food, water and healthcare to families in desperate need.

The funds you raise will support Australia for UNHCR’s Emergency Response program, providing life-changing emergency relief for people at the height of crisis, many of whom have fled their homes with only the clothes on their backs.

What impact will i have?

  • $75 can provide blankets for 15 refugees, protecting them in cold, harsh climates
  • $125 can buy an emergency survival kit containing bed mats, mosquito nets, blankets, a kitchen set and sanitation items
  • $470 can provide an all-weather tent for a family of five, sheltering them from the elements
  • $1375 can provide safe water to 200 refugees for a week in an emergency situation

These basic items can mean the difference between life and death for a vulnerable refugee family. A simple plastic container can protect them against disease by enabling them to carry and store clean water. A cooking pot gives them the capacity to turn their dry food ration into a nourishing meal. A tent gives them a place to call home and protection from the elements — the blazing sun, bitter cold and rain, blasting winds and sandstorms.

Your personal Run Melbourne journey will indeed change the lives of those fleeing the world’s many war and disaster zones.
