From aid to empowerment

In a country where 1 in 5 children die before the age of 5, Afghanaid’s work has an immediate effect helping build a future where people have healthier lives.
Our vision is of a peaceful and secure Afghanistan, where Afghans exercise their rights to political freedom and economic opportunity in a country where institutions are held accountable.
Afghanistan is amongst the poorest countries in the world. Decades of war, grinding poverty and a collapse in agriculture have devastated its infrastructure and weakened its population.
Afghanaid has worked alongside Afghan communities since 1983, providing assistance for people in hardship and distress. We currently work with over 500,000 Afghan adults and children.
Afghanaid currently works with women, men and children in four provinces of Afghanistan helping to run projects from irrigation and kitchen gardens to teaching children about their rights and training rural women to be midwives. To continue with this crucial work we need people like YOU to share your time and efforts to help us raise awareness and funds for our programmes.
Below are just a few ways your fundraising can help Afghanaid’s vital programmes.
- £25 buys 10 books for a children's resource centre library.
- £90 buys stationery required to run one month training at an Afghanaid Farm Field School for 30 farmers.
- £120 provides all the seeds and tools necessary to create a kitchen garden
- £200 buys saplings to establish a watershed management plot to reduce soil erosion
- £900 buys material for children’s recreational activities for 10 child peer groups.
- £1000 can build an irrigation canal to water the crops of one community.
- £1000 will enable a female-member of Afghanaid’s Self Help Groups to start poultry household level enterprise.
- £5000 buys schooling material, including uniforms, for 20 disadvantaged children in rural Afghanistan.

This year, Afghanaid has places at the Virgin London Marathon, adidas Half Marathon at Silverstone and the Bupa London 10000 Race. You can find information about these races and other races, treks and bike rides offered by Afghanaid by clicking on the links to the right of the page.
